Jack’s NICU Experience

I had our first baby on a weekend in June. I work as a CNA in labor and delivery and delivered at the hospital I work with, surrounded by family and friends. Such a great delivery experience. When my son was two days old, our night shift nurse (who happened to be a traveler nurse with a lot of experience in a NICU) took my son to do one of his assessments. About 5 minutes later she came back and told us that she had called the pediatrician to come look at my son because his abdomen was tight and distended. It was around 3 am. Being the sleep deprived new mama, I said, “okay, sounds good.” Then I realized it. They called the pediatrician in the middle of the night. That only happens when something is really wrong. I woke my husband up and just told him that something was wrong with our little Jack.

They did an X-ray and saw that his intestines were twisted and that was causing his belly to swell. Jack was immediately life-flighted to Primary Children’s Hospital. I went with our son while my mother-in-law drove my husband down to Salt Lake. At Primary’s they did another test and found that his intestines were twisted so bad that the twist was cutting off blood flow to parts of his intestines. He was rushed into surgery immediately. My husband and I spent the morning in tears and in shock that our little precious baby that we thought was healthy was now going through a major surgery at two days old.

My husband got to Primary’s shortly before they finished with the surgery. The doctors said that the surgery went better than expected and Jack didn’t have to have a bowel resection. Thank goodness!!

We spent the next two weeks in Salt Lake City as Jack recovered from his surgery. They expected around a 6 week recovery in the NICU but Jack recovered in a third of that time and we were able to bring him home about two weeks later. 🤍
